The Human Endocannabinoid System (ECS)
The human endocannabinoid system (ECS) is a complex cell-signaling system. The ECS exists and is active in your body even if you don’t use cannabis. The ECS is responsible for a variety of physiological as well as pathophysiological processes including neural development, immune function, inflammation, appetite, metabolism and energy homeostasis, cardiovascular function, digestion, bone development and bone density, synaptic plasticity and learning, pain, reproduction, psychiatric disorders, psychomotor behaviour, memory, wake/sleep cycles, and the regulation of stress and emotional state.
There is strong evidence that dysregulation of the ECS contributes to many human diseases including pain, inflammation, psychiatric disorders and neurodegenerative diseases. The cannabis plant contains over 100 chemicals compounds called cannabinoids. Cannabinoids interact with the human endocannabinoid system to produce a broad range of effects. The two most studied and discussed cannabinoids are CBD (cannabidiol) and THC (tetrahydrocannabinol).
CBD
Cannabidiol (CBD) is a nonpsychoactive compound. CBD is most known for its analgesic, anti-inflammatory and anti-anxiety properties without the intoxicating effects. Studies suggest a full-spectrum CBD, rather than an isolate, is more effective because of the better absorption rates of products in their natural form.
CBD is used to help with various conditions, such as:
- Seizures
- Inflammation
- Pain
- Psychosis or mental disorders
- Inflammatory bowel disease
- Nausea
- Migraines
- Depression
- Anxiety
THC
Tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) is a psychoactive compound. THC is by far the best studied cannabinoid and is responsible for many, if not most, of the physical and psychotropic effects of cannabis. THC strongly binds to receptors in the brain, which is why those who consume it are more likely to report feeling “euphoria” after consuming it.
THC is used to help with conditions such as:
- Pain
- Muscle spasticity
- Glaucoma
- Insomnia
- Low appetite
- Nausea
- Anxiety
